Portlaoise Golf Club is situated on the site of the original Maryborough Golf Club which dates back to the 1800's.

It was born out of a passion to provide golfers of all abilities with a course that combines traditional design and a distinctly Irish blend. It is the golf course where members and visitors can enjoy the game in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

This 18 hole parkland course is playable all year round. Gently rolling fairways and greens combine with water to provide a test for any golfer.

OPEN COMPETITIONS - 2012

We have a great list of Open Competitions again this year and visitors to the club are assured of a warm welcome. Ladies and gents Open Competitions are held on the first and third Saturdays of each month (with a few exceptions). Men's Open Competitions are held on Tuesdays while the ladies open day this year is on Sunday, 13th May.

We are located in the midlands off Exit 17 from the M7 Motorway, within easy reach, just a short distance from the Togher Roundabout, Abbeyleix Road, Portlaoise, Co. Laois.

Hole 12

Hole 12 - The feature hole of the course and one of the best holes in the Midlands. In the height of summer, with the trees in leaf, the gap can be as little as four or five yards. A stream runs through the trees, gobbling up any miss-hit or overly conservative shots. Thick rough to the right of the green, which isn't visible from the tee, also offers more problems.

Tip: Decide on a club on the tee-box and go with it. This hole punishes indecision!

Golf Pro tip of the week:

How to hit straight:

To hit the ball straight, the clubface must be square to the target at impact. To give yourself the best chance of returning the club to this position, you need to start with the clubface square at address. Look down your target line and pick a point - a mark on the ground - a few metres in front of the clubface on that line.

Place your club on the ground so that the face aims directly at this one spot. Now build the rest of your stance around this good, accurate position, making sure that your shoulders, knees, hips and toes are all perfectly parallel to this target line.
